ADELINA

Adelina was an 18-year-old young woman who lived with her mother in a small, modest neighborhood.

Her mother, Solange, had spent her entire life selling boiled eggs, ripe plantains, and bread every morning just to pay for Adelina’s education.

— “My child, I don’t want you to end up like me. I want you to study so you can have a better life,” Solange would always say.

Adelina took those words seriously.

She studied hard because she knew the sacrifices her mother was making for her.

But one day, illness struck Solange.

After weeks of being bedridden, she passed away.

After the funeral, Adelina felt like her world had collapsed.

Sitting alone at night, she cried:

— “Mom, what am I going to do now?”

But then she remembered her mother’s dream.

She made a decision.

She would continue selling boiled eggs, ripe plantains, and bread to pay for her school.

Every morning, Adelina stood by the roadside with her basket.

One morning, a beautiful black car stopped in front of her.

The window rolled down.

A well-dressed man smiled.

— “Good morning, young lady. Give me two eggs and two breads.”

Adelina served him.

— “Thank you.”

— “Is it you who sells here every morning?”

— “Yes.”

— “Aren’t you in school?”

— “I am, but I have to work to support myself.”

The man looked at her with interest.

From that day on, he began stopping by almost every morning.

He always bought something.

Sometimes he even bought more than he needed.

After a few weeks, they got to know each other.

His name was Claude.

One day, he said:

— “Adelina, you are a special young woman.”

Adelina lowered her eyes.

— “Thank you.”

— “I don’t like seeing you suffer like this.”

A Promise That Changed Everything

One afternoon, Claude invited Adelina to a restaurant.

After they ate, he looked into her eyes:

— “I want to help you.”

— “Help me?”

— “Yes. I can pay for your education in a good school. I can take care of you.”

Adelina’s heart raced.

— “Really?”

— “Yes. But I want you to come live with me.”

Adelina stayed silent.

She thought about her hardship.

She thought about her pain.

She thought about all the nights she cried after her mother’s death.

She said to herself:

“Maybe God sent this man into my life.”

After days of reflection, she accepted.

She left her small home.

She moved in with Claude.

The Truth Begins to Show

The first week felt beautiful.

The second week too.

But Adelina noticed something.

Claude never spoke again about school.

One evening, she asked:

— “When will I be enrolled in school?”

Claude smiled:

— “Don’t rush. Everything has its time.”

Another week passed.

She asked again.

— “I don’t want to lose my school year.”

— “Be patient.”

A month passed.

No school.

No enrollment.

No preparation.

Adelina began to feel deceived.

One day, she discovered she was pregnant.

She trembled:

— “Claude… I’m pregnant.”

The man showed little emotion.

— “That’s good.”

But her life changed completely.

She could no longer work.

She was no longer in school.

She had no money of her own.

She depended entirely on Stevenson.

Little by little, he controlled everything.

Where she went.

Who she talked to.

What she did.

The Biggest Mistake

One night, after another argument, Adelina cried:

— “You promised me school!”

— “You already have everything you need.”

— “No! That’s not what you promised me!”

— “You are the mother of my child now. Focus on that.”

Those words hit her like a knife.

For the first time, she understood.

Claude was never interested in her dreams.

He was only interested in having her.

That night, she remembered her mother.

She remembered all the sacrifices.

She remembered standing under the sun selling goods.

Tears filled her eyes:

— “Mom… I failed you.”

But a small voice inside her replied:

“No. You only made a mistake. Life is not over.”

Ending: The Decision That Saved Her Life

One night, after another fight with Claude, Adelina sat alone while her baby slept.

She looked at her child and cried.

She remembered her mother waking up before sunrise to sell goods so she could go to school.

She remembered her dreams.

And she realized something:

If she stayed here, she would lose everything her mother fought for.

The next morning, while Claude was at work, Adelina packed a few clothes for herself and the baby.

She held her child tightly.

And she left the house quietly.

She had little money.

She didn’t know what tomorrow would bring.

But she knew one thing:

She had to take her life back.

When Claude returned home and saw the empty house, he called her:

— “Where are you?”

— “I’m gone.”

— “What does that mean?”

— “It means I will not live on empty promises anymore.”

— “You can’t do that.”

— “I already did.”

She hung up.

For the first time in a long time, she felt peace.

A Few Years Later

Life was not easy.

Adelina returned to selling boiled eggs, ripe plantains, and bread.

She woke up early every morning with her child.

She attended evening classes.

She worked hard.

Many times she wanted to give up.

But she remembered her mother and her child.

After years of struggle, Adelina finally graduated.

On graduation day, her child sat in the front row.

When her name was called, the crowd applauded.

Her child stood up and shouted:

— “That’s my mother!”

Adelina couldn’t hold back her tears.

She raised her diploma and said in her heart:

— “Mom, I made it. I didn’t let my dreams die.”

LESSON OF THE STORY

Never hand your dreams over to anyone. Someone may help you reach them, but the dream must remain in your hands. Because when you give your future to someone else, you risk losing both your dream and yourself.
