Part 1: The Illness That Changed Everything
In the city, there were very few people who didn’t know the name Richard Desrosiers.
Richard was a successful businessman who had built his fortune through years of hard work. He owned several buildings, a large construction company, valuable land, luxury cars, and millions of dollars in the bank. Whenever he drove through town, people stopped to greet him.
“Good morning, Mr. Richard!”
“Much respect, boss!”
“May God continue to bless you!”
Richard never ignored anyone.
“Thank you.”
He always smiled.
His mansion looked more like a palace.
His wife, Sandra, loved the luxurious lifestyle. She spent her days shopping for expensive clothes, jewelry, and anything money could buy.
Their twenty-two-year-old son, Kevin, drove a sports car, spent weekends with his friends, and never had to worry about paying a single bill.
Working in the house was a maid named Melanie.
Melanie had worked for Richard’s family for nearly ten years.
Although she was an employee, Richard never treated her as if she were less important than anyone else.
He often said,
“Respect should never depend on a person’s job.”
Because of that, Melanie respected him with all her heart.
⸻
One Monday morning…
Richard was walking downstairs, getting ready to leave for work.
As he reached the last step, his entire body suddenly began to shake.
He grabbed his chest.
“Sandra…”
Before he could finish speaking…
He collapsed.
BANG!
Sandra rushed out of the living room.
“Richard!”
Kevin dropped his phone and ran toward him.
“Dad!”
They immediately called an ambulance.
⸻
The hospital was filled with doctors.
They performed every medical test imaginable.
Blood tests.
CT scans.
MRI scans.
Heart examinations.
Liver tests.
Kidney evaluations.
Everything.
Several hours later…
One of the doctors walked into the waiting room.
Sandra stood up immediately.
“Doctor… what’s wrong with my husband?”
The doctor removed his glasses and sighed.
“Mrs. Desrosiers… we haven’t found any illness.”
Sandra stared at him in disbelief.
“What do you mean?”
“Every single test came back normal.”
Kevin couldn’t hide his frustration.
“That doesn’t make any sense! My father can’t even stand on his own!”
The doctor slowly shook his head.
“We don’t understand it either.”
⸻
The weeks went by.
Richard was taken to some of the best hospitals in the country.
Boston.
New York.
Atlanta.
Specialists from different medical fields examined him.
Every doctor gave the same answer.
“We cannot identify the cause of his condition.”
Meanwhile…
Richard became weaker every day.
He could no longer walk.
He couldn’t stand.
He couldn’t even eat without someone helping him.
One evening…
He lay in bed staring at the ceiling.
He reached for Sandra’s hand.
“I’m tired.”
Sandra struggled to hold back her tears.
“You’re going to recover.”
Richard smiled weakly.
“I feel like my life is coming to an end.”
“Please don’t say that.”
She began to cry.
A few moments later, Kevin entered the room.
He sat beside his father’s bed.
For the first time in his life…
He saw his father completely helpless.
He gently held his father’s hand.
“Dad… I need you.”
Richard smiled faintly.
“I need both of you too.”
⸻
A few days later…
Some close relatives came to visit.
One of them quietly said,
“I know you’ve already tried every hospital.”
Sandra nodded.
“We’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars looking for a cure.”
The relative took a deep breath.
“There’s a spiritual healer who lives in a remote village.”
Kevin immediately stood up.
“We don’t believe in those things.”
The man calmly replied,
“You believed the hospitals could save him.”
Silence filled the room.
He continued,
“Sometimes, when every door has closed… people try another one.”
Sandra looked at Richard.
Richard slowly nodded.
“Let’s go.”
⸻
The following morning…
They began the long journey.
The vehicle traveled for hours along dusty roads.
They crossed mountains.
They crossed rivers.
Finally…
They arrived at a small, old house.
There were no fancy gates.
No luxury vehicles.
Only a large tree standing quietly in front of the entrance.
An elderly man dressed in white sat calmly on a wooden chair.
He never looked up.
Instead, he quietly said,
“I’ve been expecting you.”
Sandra froze.
Kevin looked at his mother.
Richard remained silent.
The old man slowly raised his eyes and looked directly at Richard.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“You didn’t come here to ask whether you’ll recover.”
Richard took a deep breath.
“No.”
The old man continued,
“You came to ask… what price you must pay to recover.”
Richard was speechless.
The old man gestured toward the doorway.
“Come inside.”
They walked into the small house.
The old man lit an oil lamp.
Then he quietly closed the door behind them.
After several seconds of silence, he looked Richard straight in the eyes.
“The answer I’m about to give you… will change your life forever.”
Richard swallowed nervously.
“Whatever the price is… I’m ready.”
The old man lowered his head for a moment before looking up again.
“Are you certain?”
Without hesitation, Richard answered,
“Yes.”
The old man took a deep breath.
Then he said,
“Very well…
Listen carefully.”

When Money Disappears
Part 2: The Price of Life
The old man looked directly into Richard’s eyes.
The room was so quiet that everyone could hear the flame of the small oil lamp flickering.
After a long pause, he finally spoke.
“There is only one way for you to recover.”
Sandra leaned forward.
“What is it?”
The old man answered calmly,
“You must give away everything you own.”
Silence.
Richard frowned.
“What do you mean… everything?”
“Everything.”
“My company?”
“Yes.”
“My houses?”
“Yes.”
“My land.”
“Yes.”
“My cars.”
“Yes.”
“My bank accounts.”
“Every single dollar.”
Sandra immediately stood up.
“This is madness!”
The old man remained calm.
“I’m not finished.”
He continued,
“You must give all of it to a poor man… someone who truly owns nothing.”
Kevin laughed sarcastically.
“This has to be some kind of joke.”
The old man ignored him.
“Once everything has legally become his, you must leave your home and take his place.”
Sandra couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“You expect my husband to become homeless?”
The old man slowly nodded.
“If he truly wants to live.”
Richard looked down at his trembling hands.
“So… if I do all of that…”
“You will recover.”
“And if I refuse?”
The old man looked him in the eyes.
“You already know the answer.”
The room fell silent.
⸻
On the drive home…
No one spoke.
Only the sound of the tires rolling along the road could be heard.
Finally, Sandra broke the silence.
“Richard… you’re not seriously thinking about doing this, are you?”
Richard kept looking out the window.
“My health has no price.”
Kevin shook his head.
“Dad, you’ve spent thirty years building this empire.”
“I know.”
“You worked day and night.”
“I know.”
“And now you’re going to hand it over to a complete stranger?”
Richard slowly turned toward his son.
“If I die… none of it will matter.”
⸻
That evening…
The entire family gathered in the living room.
Richard had invited his brothers, sisters, cousins, and a few close friends.
Everyone had heard about the old man’s condition.
One of Richard’s brothers stood up.
“You can’t do this.”
Another relative added,
“You built everything with your own sweat.”
A close friend said,
“If you give away everything today, you’ll regret it tomorrow.”
Sandra looked at her husband.
“Listen to them.”
Kevin nodded.
“We can keep looking for another doctor.”
Richard remained quiet.
After a few moments, he slowly stood up.
“I’ve spent my entire life making money.”
Everyone listened.
“I’ve bought houses.”
“I’ve built businesses.”
“I’ve earned respect.”
He paused.
“But today…”
“My greatest wish isn’t to become richer.”
“It’s simply to stand on my own feet again.”
No one said a word.
Richard looked at everyone.
“I’ve made my decision.”
⸻
The following morning…
Richard sat in his office.
He pressed a button on his desk.
A few seconds later, Melanie entered.
“You called me, sir?”
Richard smiled.
“Yes.”
“I need you to do something for me.”
“Anything.”
“There’s a homeless man who usually begs outside our front gate.”
Melanie nodded.
“I know him.”
“Please bring him inside.”
She looked surprised.
“But… sir…”
Richard smiled again.
“Please.”
“Of course.”
She quietly left.
A few minutes later…
The poor man walked into the office wearing torn clothes.
He looked nervous.
“You wanted to see me?”
Richard pointed to a chair.
“Please, have a seat.”
The man hesitated.
“I don’t think I’m dressed well enough.”
Richard smiled warmly.
“In this office, your clothes don’t define your worth.”
The man slowly sat down.
⸻
A few moments later…
Richard’s attorney arrived carrying several legal folders.
“Good morning, Mr. Desrosiers.”
“Good morning.”
The attorney looked around the room.
“I’ve prepared the documents you requested.”
Sandra suddenly stood up.
“Richard… don’t do this.”
Kevin raised his voice.
“Dad, please!”
Richard looked at his attorney.
“Read the documents.”
The attorney opened the first folder.
“As of today, all properties owned by Richard Desrosiers…”
He paused.
“…will be transferred to Mr. Joseph Laurent.”
The poor man almost jumped out of his chair.
“What?”
The attorney continued.
“The construction company…”
“The investment accounts…”
“The bank accounts…”
“The vehicles…”
“The land…”
“The family residence…”
“Everything.”
Joseph stared at Richard.
“There must be some mistake.”
Richard smiled.
“No mistake.”
Joseph’s eyes filled with tears.
“Why would you do this for someone like me?”
Richard answered softly,
“Because today… your life is worth more than my wealth.”
⸻
Sandra burst into tears.
“This isn’t fair!”
Kevin slammed his fist on the table.
“You’ve lost your mind!”
Several relatives began shouting.
“This is insanity!”
“You’ll destroy your family!”
“You’ll regret this!”
Only Melanie remained silent.
Richard looked at her.
“What do you think?”
Melanie hesitated.
“I don’t think anyone should lose everything…”
She lowered her head.
“…but I know one thing.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“You built all of this once.”
She smiled gently.
“If anyone can build it again…”
“It’s you.”
Richard couldn’t hold back his smile.
For the first time in weeks…
Hope returned to his face.
⸻
One by one…
Richard signed every document.
His signature appeared on the final page.
The attorney looked up.
“It’s done.”
Joseph Laurent was now one of the wealthiest men in the country.
Richard slowly took off his expensive watch.
He placed it on the table.
Then he removed the keys to his luxury cars.
His house keys.
His office keys.
His wallet.
He pushed everything toward Joseph.
“They’re all yours now.”
Joseph began to cry.
“I don’t know how to thank you.”
Richard simply smiled.
“Take good care of them.”
⸻
That evening…
Richard called the old man.
“I’ve done everything exactly as you instructed.”
The old man answered calmly,
“Good.”
“When will I recover?”
“Tonight.”
“At exactly midnight.”
“And tomorrow morning…”
“You must leave the house.”
“It no longer belongs to you.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“I understand.”
The old man spoke one last sentence before hanging up.
“Tomorrow…”
“You will discover who truly loved Richard…”
“…and who only loved his money.”
End of part 2
When Money Disappears
Part 3: The Weight of Being Poor
Richard opened his eyes.
The digital clock beside his bed read 12:00 A.M.
For the first time in months…
He felt something different.
He slowly moved his fingers.
Then his arms.
His legs.
Sandra, who had fallen asleep in a chair beside the bed, suddenly woke up.
“Richard?”
He slowly sat up.
Sandra covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Richard carefully placed both feet on the floor.
He stood up.
Without anyone helping him.
Sandra burst into tears.
“You’re standing…”
Richard took a few steps across the room.
He smiled.
“I’m healed.”
Kevin rushed into the bedroom after hearing the commotion.
“Dad!”
He hugged his father tightly.
“I knew you’d make it!”
Richard hugged him back.
“I’ve been given a second chance.”
⸻
The next morning…
The mansion was unusually quiet.
Joseph Laurent, the former homeless man, arrived with the attorney.
Richard welcomed him with a smile.
“Good morning.”
Joseph looked uncomfortable.
“I still can’t believe any of this.”
Richard placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Neither can I.”
The attorney cleared his throat.
“Legally, everything now belongs to Mr. Joseph Laurent.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
Sandra walked downstairs carrying several suitcases.
“I found a small house to rent.”
Her voice sounded cold.
Kevin carried the last suitcase to the front door.
Neither of them looked at Richard.
Richard looked around the living room one last time.
The family photos…
The expensive furniture…
The grand staircase…
Everything he had spent years building.
He smiled quietly.
“It’s time.”
He removed his designer suit.
His expensive shoes.
His gold watch.
He put on the old, torn clothes Joseph had once worn.
Joseph stared at him.
“You don’t have to do this.”
Richard smiled.
“Yes, I do.”
⸻
As Richard walked out of the mansion…
Neighbors watched from their windows.
Some whispered.
“Is that really Richard?”
“He looks like a beggar.”
“What happened to him?”
Not a single person greeted him.
Just yesterday…
Everyone had called him “Boss.”
Today…
People crossed the street to avoid him.
Richard noticed everything.
But he kept walking.
⸻
Three days later…
Joseph’s life had changed completely.
He wore elegant suits.
He drove Richard’s luxury cars.
Business executives greeted him with respect.
“Good morning, Mr. Laurent.”
“Welcome, sir.”
Everyone smiled at him.
Many of the same people who had ignored him when he was poor now treated him like royalty.
Joseph remained humble.
But deep inside…
He understood exactly what was happening.
“They’re not respecting me…”
“They’re respecting the money.”
⸻
Meanwhile…
Richard slept on an old bench near a public park.
Some nights…
He slept under a bridge.
Other nights…
He found shelter wherever he could.
His stomach often growled with hunger.
People passed him every day.
Most never looked at him.
Some even insulted him.
“Get a job!”
“Stop begging!”
Richard lowered his head.
Just a week earlier…
Those same people had praised him.
Now they treated him like he didn’t exist.
⸻
One afternoon…
Richard saw Sandra driving by.
She stopped at a traffic light.
Richard smiled.
He slowly walked toward the car.
Sandra saw him.
Their eyes met for a brief moment.
Then…
She looked away.
When the light turned green…
She drove off without saying a single word.
Richard stood there silently.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
He whispered,
“So… this is what shame looks like.”
⸻
A few days later…
Richard saw Kevin outside a shopping mall.
“Dad!”
Richard called softly.
Kevin turned around.
He froze.
His friends were standing beside him.
One of them asked,
“Do you know that homeless man?”
Kevin looked embarrassed.
After a few seconds…
He quietly answered,
“No.”
Richard felt as if his heart had stopped beating.
Kevin turned around…
And walked away.
Richard didn’t call him again.
He simply watched his son disappear into the crowd.
⸻
That evening…
Richard sat alone behind an abandoned building.
He hadn’t eaten all day.
He quietly looked up at the stars.
“I guess this is who I am now.”
Just then…
Someone approached.
It was Melanie.
She carried a small paper bag.
She smiled gently.
“I figured you hadn’t eaten.”
Richard looked at the bag.
“You came.”
Melanie handed him the food.
“Of course I did.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“Everyone else forgot me.”
Melanie sat beside him.
“I didn’t.”
Richard looked at her.
“Why?”
She answered without hesitation.
“Because you were kind to me when you had everything.”
She paused.
“And kindness shouldn’t disappear just because money does.”
Richard couldn’t hold back his tears.
For the first time since leaving his mansion…
He cried.
Not because he had lost his fortune…
But because one person still saw his value.
⸻
From that day on…
Melanie visited him whenever she could.
Sometimes she brought food.
Sometimes clean clothes.
Sometimes medicine.
Sometimes…
She simply sat beside him and listened.
She never asked for anything.
She never complained.
She never stopped showing up.
Three months passed.
Richard had learned something money had never been able to teach him.
He had discovered the difference…
Between people who loved his wealth…
And people who loved him.
Then, one morning…
Joseph Laurent arrived with a black luxury car.
He stepped out and smiled.
“I think it’s time.”
Richard looked at him.
“Time for what?”
Joseph smiled.
“Time for everyone to learn the truth.”
End of Part 3
When Money Disappears
Part 4: The Truth That Money Revealed
Three months had passed.
On a quiet Saturday morning, Joseph Laurent sat in Richard’s former office.
He picked up the phone.
“Good morning, Sandra.”
“Joseph?”
“I’d like you and the family to come to the house this afternoon.”
Sandra sounded surprised.
“Is everything alright?”
“I have some important news.”
“What kind of news?”
Joseph smiled.
“I’d rather tell you in person.”
After hanging up, he made several more calls.
Kevin.
Richard’s brothers.
His sisters.
A few close relatives.
Finally…
He called Melanie.
“Can you come this afternoon?”
“Of course.”
“I don’t want you to miss this.”
⸻
At exactly three o’clock…
Everyone was gathered inside the mansion.
The same mansion where Richard had once lived.
Sandra looked around.
“Where’s Joseph?”
“I’m here.”
Joseph walked slowly into the living room.
He looked at every face before speaking.
“Thank you all for coming.”
He took a deep breath.
“I have something important to tell you.”
The room became silent.
“But before I do…”
“I want to ask each of you a question.”
Everyone waited.
“In the last three months…”
“How many times did you visit Richard?”
Silence.
Joseph looked at Sandra.
She lowered her eyes.
He turned toward Kevin.
“How many times?”
Kevin couldn’t answer.
Joseph slowly walked around the room.
“Did anyone here ask if he had eaten?”
No one spoke.
“Did anyone ask where he slept?”
Silence.
“Did anyone ask if he was alive?”
The room felt heavy.
Finally…
Joseph looked toward Melanie.
“And you?”
Melanie answered quietly,
“I visited him whenever I could.”
“What did you bring him?”
“Food.”
“Anything else?”
“Medicine.”
Joseph smiled.
“What did you ask for in return?”
Melanie looked confused.
“Nothing.”
Joseph nodded.
“I know.”
⸻
A moment later…
The attorney stood up holding a thick legal folder.
“Ladies and gentlemen…”
“I believe it’s time.”
Sandra frowned.
“Time for what?”
The attorney slowly closed the folder.
“To tell you the truth.”
He looked around the room.
“Richard Desrosiers…”
“…was never sick.”
The room exploded.
“What?”
“Impossible!”
“That’s a lie!”
Kevin stood up.
“What are you talking about?”
The attorney remained calm.
“It was all a carefully planned test.”
Sandra felt her legs weaken.
“You mean…”
“My husband wasn’t dying?”
“No.”
“Everything you witnessed…”
“The hospital visits.”
“The specialists.”
“The transfer of the fortune.”
“The move.”
“It was all part of a plan created by Richard… with my help.”
Nobody could believe what they were hearing.
⸻
Just then…
The front door slowly opened.
Everyone turned around.
A man wearing torn clothes walked inside.
His beard had grown.
His shoes were worn out.
But everyone immediately recognized him.
Richard.
Sandra covered her mouth.
“Oh my God…”
Kevin whispered,
“Dad…”
Richard slowly walked into the middle of the room.
No one dared to speak.
He looked at every face.
Then he smiled sadly.
“So…”
“Now you recognize me.”
⸻
Richard remained silent for a few seconds.
Then he began to speak.
“When I was rich…”
“I never ate alone.”
“I always had visitors.”
“My phone never stopped ringing.”
“Everyone called me their friend.”
He paused.
“But the day I became poor…”
“My phone became silent.”
“My house disappeared.”
“My friends disappeared.”
“My family disappeared.”
He looked directly at Sandra.
“The woman who once promised to stand beside me…”
“…couldn’t even stop her car to ask if I had eaten.”
Sandra burst into tears.
“I’m sorry…”
Richard slowly turned toward Kevin.
“My own son…”
“…pretended he didn’t know me.”
Kevin lowered his head.
“I was ashamed.”
Richard nodded.
“I know.”
He looked around the room.
“Three months.”
“That’s all it took…”
“…for people to forget everything I had ever done for them.”
⸻
Richard slowly walked toward Melanie.
She immediately stood up.
Richard smiled warmly.
“During those three months…”
“One person never forgot me.”
He turned to everyone.
“She brought me food.”
“When I had nothing…”
“She reminded me that I was still a human being.”
Melanie’s eyes filled with tears.
Richard gently held her hand.
“Melanie…”
“As of today…”
“You are no longer a maid.”
Everyone looked at him in surprise.
Richard nodded toward the attorney.
The attorney handed Melanie an envelope.
She opened it with trembling hands.
Inside was an acceptance letter to one of the country’s top universities.
Melanie looked up.
“I… I don’t understand.”
Richard smiled.
“I’ve already paid for your entire education.”
She began crying.
“After graduation…”
“You’ll have a management position in my company.”
Melanie shook her head in disbelief.
“I don’t deserve this.”
Richard smiled.
“Kindness always deserves to be rewarded.”
⸻
Joseph stepped forward.
“I have something to say.”
Richard nodded.
Joseph looked at the family.
“When I was poor…”
“People avoided me.”
“The day I became rich…”
“Those same people suddenly respected me.”
He smiled sadly.
“I’ve learned that money can change how people see you…”
“…but it cannot change who you truly are.”
Then…
He reached into his jacket.
He handed Richard a folder.
“I’ve kept my promise.”
Richard opened it.
Every property…
Every business…
Every bank account…
Everything had been transferred back into Richard’s name.
The room fell silent once again.
⸻
Richard closed the folder.
Then he looked at his family.
“I forgive all of you.”
Sandra looked hopeful.
Richard continued,
“But forgiveness…”
“…is not the same as trust.”
Nobody spoke.
“From today forward…”
“No one in this family will waste money.”
“I will personally approve every major expense.”
“My wealth will never again become the reason people pretend to love me.”
He looked at Kevin.
“If you want a luxury car…”
“Earn it.”
He looked at Sandra.
“If you want expensive jewelry…”
“Learn the value of sacrifice first.”
Neither of them argued.
They simply nodded.
⸻
Richard then smiled.
“I’ve spent my entire life believing money was my greatest achievement.”
He looked around the room.
“But losing it…”
“…was the greatest lesson of my life.”
He placed his hand on Joseph’s shoulder.
“You reminded me that poverty doesn’t make someone worthless.”
Then he looked at Melanie.
“And you reminded me…”
“…that true loyalty can never be bought.”
Richard slowly walked toward the large window overlooking the city.
The sun was beginning to set.
He smiled peacefully.
“I lost my fortune…”
“…only to discover the people who were worth far more than money.”
The camera slowly pulled away as the family stood silently reflecting on everything that had happened.
Outside, the setting sun filled the sky with golden light.
The End.
